Energy company Innogy Renewables Ireland hopes to build 20 to 25 windmills along the west Waterford - east Cork border on a site roughly 1,400 hectares in size.

The section on the Waterford side – around Knockanore – is currently classed as a preferred zone for wind energy development.

Local councillor James Tobin proposed an emergency motion on the situation at a meeting of Waterford City and County Council. He is unhappy with the company behind it.

Sinn Fein’s Siobhán Whelan says the turbines should be built offshore.

Independent Joe Conway was the only councillor to vote against.

He says building turbines offshore has its own complications.

CEO Michael Walsh says he needs to seek legal advice before deciding whether the council can implement the motion.

Labour’s John Pratt is a councillor in the area. He says the next county development plan needs to include wording that protects the area proposed for the turbine development.
